First, in order to accurately define subculture, the basic term culture should be defined. This easiest way to do this is by recognizing some of its characteristics.
1. Culture is comprehensive, all parts must fit together in a logical fashion
2. Culture is learned, it is not something we are born with
3. Culture is created within boundaries of acceptable behavior
4. Cultural standards are agreed upon by consensus
5. Culture tends to be conservative, it does not quickly accept change
When looking at these characteristics closely, it becomes clear that this is more accurately a definition of popular, or mainstream, culture. When a group exists outside of this 'norm' they are typically described as subcultures.
